The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have stated that car crashes are the number one cause of death for teens. The actual numbers associated with this statistic are scary and break down to this one statistic: one in three teen deaths will be caused by motor vehicle crashes.

Unfortunately, many of the causes of these crashes are avoidable and are the result of certain patterns of behavior that teens tend to exhibit. They are patterns that insurance companies know about and rate policies higher because of. As an example, teens show a consistent pattern of underestimating dangerous and hazardous situations. And they do so more often than older, more experienced drivers. They also tend to follow vehicles more closely than older drivers and are less likely to wear seatbelts. Each of these behaviors can easily cause an accident and is something that can be proactively changed if the teen is taught to do so and willing to do so.

This is why insurance companies charge such high premiums for teen drivers. But there are things that you can do to help reduce your teen’s insurance premiums in the face of all these additional risks.

Get them to take driving lessons: Driving lessons will teach your teen how to better handle and react while in dangerous and stressful road situations. They may also reduce your insurance premiums.

Enforce the rules: Teach your teen to drive the way they should be driving and hold them accountable when they don’t. While this may not lower premiums initially, their avoidance of accidents will ensure that they have decreasing premiums over the years.
Talk to them: Teens are notorious for not realizing that they are both mortal and fallible. Talking to your teen about the responsibility of driving and the very real dangers that they face each time they get behind the wheel.
