IMAPAC hosted an Asia Pacific focused sustainable agriculture conference, bringing together leading businesses from across the agricultural and food industries, government decision-makers, farming associations, non-governmental organisations and academics to Singapore.

SINGAPORE, 12 July 2012 – According to a Senior Agricultural Scientist, “The El Nino weather event is expected to occur anytime later this year, bringing dry weather to Australia and damaging the wheat crop”.

El Nino is the warming of ocean temperatures in the Pacific accompanied by drought in parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia, and in contrast above normal rains in the Americas.

Dr Daniel Tan, Senior Lecturer in Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, of the University of Sydney, Australia commented that El Nino is currently in a neutral stage but a study on ocean temperatures stated that this weather pattern may become active again. In addition, weather forecasting models show that there is a strong possibility of El Nino's occurrence and this usually results in below average rainfall and even drought in parts of Australia.

El Nino's occurrence can affect agriculture output elsewhere as well and further push up global food prices which are already rallying due to the increased frequency of extreme weather events across the globe.

World Sustainable Agriculture Congress – 10-12 July 2012 - is the ONLY conference where CEOs/CSR leaders of Asia’s food and agriculture industry meet to determine and identify new strategies for development of future agriculture sustainability strategies that propel the industry forward to ensure a sustainable future.

This conference was developed with the support of our Advisory Board of the top industry experts namely Hans Johr, Head of Agriculture, Nestle, Switzerland Professor Paul Teng, Senior Fellow, Food Security, S.
