The Alaskan Diaries 2012: DAY #1
September 15, 2012
Anchorage, Alaska
6:00am
This was a long 13 hours flight up to the top of the world from Florida. I did all my sleeping on the plane and I am thankful for it, because when I arrived at the Chelsea Inn in Anchorage at 2:00am, I found I could not get to sleep. This is not the farthest I have been. In my early 20's I had a layover in Reykjavik, Iceland on my way to Luxemburg and onward to Paris, only one hour. However this is the farthest I have visited. I shall be in Alaska for 5 days. I do admit I shall be a little discourage because I shall not have the time to see where my great African American ancestry, The US African American Army units of the 93rd, 95th and 97th Infantry, who built the Alaskan Highway known as the ALCAN Highway (Alaska-Canada Highway) and today is called Alaska Highway #2.
After reading the history of these great African American Military men, I found out that they were written out of history. During WWII, these great men built the Alaska section of the ALCAN Highway, which connected Alaska and Canada. For a very long time they were written out of American History until General Colin Luther Powell had them rightfully placed in American history.
I am getting hungry. I haven't had a decent meal since I left Florida. It is cold and rain, with the high today up into the 50's. I have some big plans today, as I shall visit the Gulf of Alaska and photography some mountains and glaciers.
PS: I shall like to thank God Almighty for making this possible.

Willow, Alaska
With the rain coming down so heavily in Anchorage, I decided to take a drive towards the Arctic Circle. I decided to go in search for some sunshine and I was told, by the Internet, that Fairbanks, Alaska was quite sunny today. For many of you who do not know, Alaska is the largest state in the USA. The bulk of the state can be measured by Key West, Florida up to Philadlephia, Pennsylvania, over to Chicago, Illinois and down to Texas. It is huge. It is very beautiful watching the natural scenery headed north from Anchorage. I drove through Wasilla and Houston to finally take a detour to Nancy Lake Recreation Park. The snow top mountains along this scenic drive on Highway Alaska #1 is beautiful. I am warned about the very bad weather Anchorage is suppose to be getting tonight, as trees are known to topple over. This is one reason I decided to head north away from the storm in the south. A couple I met in Willow, Alaska told me that this storm is the effect of the pressure of the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, and that it happens very seldom in Anchorage. Well I have decided to head back, however their are some sights I shall like to photograph if the weather permits.
