James Nance graduated in 1971 from the USAF Academy and spent 6 years as an Air Force pilot serving in Viet Nam. After he completed a 30 year career as a pilot for Northwest Airlines. In addition to his flying career, Nance earned a second degree in art in Minneapolis and has persued a second career of portrait sculpture, creating over 200 portrait bust sculptures. He retired from the airline in 2007 and currently lives in Loveland Colorado with his wife Jeanne, 7 dogs, and 2 horses.

For the Inauguration, Lincoln Sculptor James J. Nance Creates Three New Portrait Sculptures of President Barack Obama

Loveland, CO (BlackNews.com) - To commemorate the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States, Colorado sculptor James J. Nance has just completed and released three new limited edition portrait sculptures of President Barack Obama, which may be viewed at the artist's website www.AbrahamLincolnArtGallery.com

Jim Nance, who is a former Air Force pilot with service in Viet Nam, specializes in bronze portrait commissions and figurative sculpture. Institutions, corporations, museums, private collectors, and clients have acquired his portrait and figurative work. Nance's sculpture studio is located in Colorado Rockies artistic community of Loveland, which is home to many of America's finest bronze art foundries. During his 30-year artistic career, Jim Nance has won international awards and has created hundreds of portrait sculptures from live sittings of clients. From this experience, he has carefully developed the challenging skill of sculpting a sensitive portrait from photographs alone, a skill which he used to sculpt Barack Obama.

In addition to his portrait business, Nance has pursued a life long admiration and fascination with Abraham Lincoln by sculpting numerous Lincoln works which he offers on his web site. According to Nance, it was this Lincoln connection that first led him to pay attention to Barack Obama's message, and immediately become an enthusiastic supporter.

Nance began his sculptures of Barack Obama on the day after Obama became the Democratic candidate for president, and he completed the clays the day after his election. After collecting hundreds of photographs and recording every televised Obama speech and debate, Nance studied his face and over the summer and fall simultaneously created three separate sculptures. These sculptures include a life size bust, a ¾ scale bust, and a portrait relief panel. The two busts are virtually identical except for size, and they feature a head, full chest, and shoulders in a forward facing pose. The formal presidential pose was specifically chosen by Nance to exemplify the commanding presence of our 44th president as he leads our nation into the future.

The relief sculpture is a high relief, three quarter angle pose of Barack Obama's head and shoulder. The round relief panel is 16 inches in diameter and designed like a coin or medallion with the relief image surrounded by text around the circumference, which commemorates his inauguration. The relief panel is mounted on an 18 inch Cherry wood base for wall mount.

Both of the busts, life size and ¾ scale, as well as the relief panel are hand cast and finished in Colorado and are available as museum quality, Obama collectible, signed limited editions in bronze, cold cast bronze, and cast marble.
