PITTSBURGH, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- National City Bank of
Pennsylvania is excited to announce the winners of the 10th annual
2002 African American History Essay Contest, which ran throughout
Black History Month in February. The contest was initiated by the bank
to encourage area students to research the contributions of African
American leaders and innovators and share their learning through a
          written essay competition.
Schools, churches and organizations received entry forms inviting
students ages 6 through 18 to enter by answering the following essay
questions: What African American mentor has made an impact on you
          and/or others?
The Pittsburgh Black Media Federation judged the essays. First,
second and third place winners were awarded in three age categories.
The first place winners received a $500 savings account from National
City and $500 was presented to their sponsoring organizations. Second
place winners received a $250 savings account from National City and
third place winners received a $100 savings account with a matching
          donation to the sponsoring organizations.
This year's contest encouraged students to research a past or
present African American who is a significant role model. National
City chose George L. Miles, Jr., as the role model for this year's
African American History Essay Contest. Miles is the president and CEO
of WQED Pittsburgh. He arrived in Pittsburgh in September 1994 and
began to help WQED reconnect with the community. As a member of the
Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania, he has a strong
interest in the success of young people.
According to Rick Lewis, executive vice president, retail banking,
"National City is especially pleased this year to invite the winners
of our contest from the past ten years to be a part of today's press
conference and ceremonies. Their accomplishments over this `decade of
excellence' have been outstanding and we would hope that winning this
contest has been an inspiration to attain their goals. We also knew
that role models such as George Miles are a key part of their
motivation as they strive to make their dreams a reality."
