I am one of the newest members of the oldest art association: The National Conference of Artists. Fellow-artists, I shall not dwell on the “what has happen” ideology of this historic organization, but upon dignity and attractiveness that shall continue to forge into this new millennium. This organization, through my reading of its historic archives is a revolution. Empowering a revolution of colors. Empowering a revolution of lines. Empowering a revolution of styles. Empowering a revolution of spirits. Empowering a revolution of strokes. Empowering a revolution of Black Power. Empowering a revolution of Power Black. A vibrantly revolution, whose archives are in disarray due to lack of documenting.

For the politics of the hour, I can not go around this assembly and recognize the achievements of all of my fellow NCA artists. This modern technological age, has placed a hungry on gathering information. Information that should be store and allegianced, though somehow is decaying. This high independence of non-documenting, is placing an immeasurable distance between the generations.

Documenting is imperative for artists of the African Diaspora, to chronologue there present era, and or contribution to the Humanities. Dialogues with fellow artists via emails, letters or any written form is an example of documenting. Our thoughts as an artist are being collected by many major and minor institutions. The philosophy of just creating art, is a half developed process. This other half is for the artist to place into his own words what he has created. This written thought process, documenting, fuels other branches of the Fine Arts, especially the Humanities and Philosophy. Our thoughts and applying it to a canvas or paper is a humanistic process, capable for only humans. A God gift.

Documentation leaves a paper trail for future scholars to follow. Documentation places an awareness in Academia of your creativity. Documentation coins your contributions to new styles and techniques, ie ATRE MECCO. Documentation places a vanguard, securing your presence in Time. Documentation places your creativity into archives. Documentation is an overt display of establishing your place in history. Let me present to you a form of documentation written by a Legend to another Legend though somehow is lesser known. Let me present to you a letter written to Booker T. Washington from Henry Ossawa Tanner, from the Booker T. Washington Papers, University of Illinois Press. Research the letters written between Booker T. Washington and Henry Ossawa Tanner on the web or from your public library.
