Not so long ago the Human Resources (HR) Department – well, it didn’t really exist.  It was referred to as the ‘Personnel Office’ and was responsible for conducting interviews, paying wages and keeping records.

 

Occasionally, somebody from Personnel might have asked you about where you saw yourself in 5 years’ time.

 

Over the last couple of decades, Human Resources has transformed completely.  New technologies have taken over the more mundane roles of administration and payroll, and HR departments are now focused on employee engagement, workplace culture, and corporate health and wellbeing.

 

Engaging Employees


 

There was a time when a company didn’t really care about how their employees felt and whether they loved their jobs – they didn’t have to. People usually got a job and stayed for life.

 

These days, it’s a very different story with most people working for many different companies over their working life.

 

As a result, the HR Department is tasked with working with employees to keep them engaged with their jobs – because engaged employees are happier and more productive and more likely to go the extra mile for their employer.

 

Strengthening Culture


 

Building a strong office culture is central to ensuring employees are aligned with the beliefs and values of their employer.

 

Team building used to be all about Friday afternoon drinks, but these days there is far more on offer.  From wellness programs to team building retreats, companies almost compete with each other in an attempt to entice the right employees.

 

Employee Benefits


 

It used to be that health benefits and maybe some sort of retirement package were the only real benefits offered by companies. Nowadays, perks like on-site childcare, restaurants and gyms, as well as flexible hours, work from home and paid study options are much more common.

 

Feedback Alternatives


 

Gone are the days of the yearly structured ‘Annual Appraisal’.

Today, feedback ebbs and flows back and forth between management and employees in a continuous stream.  This allows for outstanding issues to be dealt with in a timely matter and fosters a more collaborative rather than competitive approach.

 

Embracing this new, modern HR approach means employees are front and centre and companies are really starting to understand that if they want to reach their business goals, then they must strive to help their employees reach theirs.

Hurrah for the new HR!
