Insurance – nobody likes having to pay endless premiums - until you need to make a claim.  Then, of course, it all seems worthwhile!  Well, it is if you have the right type of insurance and you have enough of it.

Interestingly, most Australian households are underinsured.  In an effort to save some money and reduce the ongoing cost of premiums, should the worst happen, many Australians would find it difficult to resume their standard of living after an insurance payout.

Another reason for underinsurance is that people simply don’t understand what is, and what isn’t, covered under their insurance.  Reading that fine print is just plain boring …

Some of the most commonly held insurances are that of home and contents insurance.  Most Australians have at least one and some have both. But do they cover your garden, trees, plants or landscaping features?

Types of Insurance

Home insurance is usually broken up into two components – Building Insurance and Contents Insurance.

Building insurance covers physical structures (ie your house and things like garden sheds) while Contents Insurance covers your removable valuables, such as furniture, white goods, etc.

Which brings us to the question: Is our garden, the outdoor furniture, and the plants growing in it covered by one of these types of insurance?

Like most things relating to insurance, the answer is:  It Depends!

Structures

Any structures in your backyard, or front yard for that matter, such as a gazebo, shed, cubby house, water feature or ponds, will be covered by your building insurance.  These items are known as permanent fixtures.

This cover also includes the flowers and trees that are actually planted into the soil but there are exceptions. Let’s discuss those further down…

Moveable Items

If you have ride on mowers, leaf blowers and whipper snippers, then these will be covered under a contents insurance policy so too will your amazing collection of potted plants (and that includes the half dead ones too … WHAT? We all have a couple of those, don’t we?!).

Falling trees

Damage caused by falling trees will only be covered where it is an ‘act of nature’. So if a violent storm brings down that large gum tree then you will probably be okay.

However, claims arising from poor maintenance aren’t covered by even the most comprehensive insurance policy. If you haven’t adequately maintained the roots of the tree, or kept it pruned to an acceptable size, then you won’t be able to claim for the damage incurred if it comes crashing down.

Tree roots

You are generally covered for damage to pipes and drains, if it is tree roots that are responsible for blocking and destroying them.

It is important to note however that most insurance policies do not cover damage to your home or your neighbour’s homes, where that damage is caused by invading tree roots. So do your research before planting any trees on a suburban lot!

Premiums

Many of these insurance events require you to add them as extras onto your policy, which means considerably higher premiums than standard insurance alone. Evaluating the potential issues that could cause damage to your outside spaces is important to ensure that you are as covered as you can be, in case of a damaging event.

It’s important to understand what you are and are not covered for under your particular insurance policy. It really is worth getting out a magnifying glass to go over that fine print – don’t wait until disaster happens!
