PART #4

4:10pm
Flying over the Congo and getting ready to enter the country of Zaire. I am getting sleepy.

7:25 pm
It is pitch dark as we pass by Lake Tanganyika. We pass the equator hours ago. The season Fall has come early for mw this year, as I journey into the world’s southern hemisphere.

11:30pm Johannesburg, South Africa
I have finally arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa. After 30 hours of travel I am writing this entry while in my hotel room. I am very excited about this trip and know God have some surprises for me here in Africa. I am exhausted, more the less I am ready for another day. As I walked through OR Tambo International Airport here in Johannesburg, the people are so friendly. The manager of the hotel was also waiting for me when I arrived at the hotel. Well I must sleep, for tomorrow I shall visit SOWETO. Good Night and May God Bless.

PS. I had to haggle with a taxi driver to take me to the hotel. As always, they set a high price and as always I set a low price. However this time the taxi driver was a great wealth of Johannesburg information, so I agreed upon his price.

Day #2

Thursday
March 15, 2102
6:30 am Johannesburg, South Africa.

I slept well last night. It is Fall, here in Johannesburg and the nights are quite cool, no need for an air conditioner. I am awaken by the sound of the morning rains and the birds singing. As I open my window to breathe the African air, I feel a sense of revitalization. My first day in Africa has begun.

10:00am Downtown Johannesburg, South Africa.
I ate a small breakfast at the hotel, before I caught the Rea Vaya (Joburg public transportation system) to the Carlton Centre. I am writing this entry atop the largest building in Africa, located at the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg. I am photographing, 50 stories atop of Johannesburg. What a panoramic view. I can see well pass SOWETO and further from (North, East, South and West) on all sides. I can view the mountains atop other mountains. Johannesburg is a Metropolitan City. It is vast. I can look out beyond where the mines are in SOWETO. I shall do some walking around downtown before I head to SOWETO.

1:00pm Orlando East, SOWETO, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Nelson Mandela Museum
I am writing this entry while sitting at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Orlando East of SOWETO. It is a small house which contains his history and the history of his wife Winnie. The tour guide spoke with us about the history of the legend. It contains a cast iron stove. The museum is very treasurely ornamented. The three remarkable memos stand out for me are:

1) There us the original world champion belt, which Sugar Ray gave to Nelson Mandela, because Nelson mentioned he aspired to be a boxer.

2) There is an apology certificate issued by The State of Michigan on behalf of the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), with many signatures, mostly by the Michigan State Representatives.

3) There are certificates issued by many HBCU’s (Historic Black Colleges and Universities), but one which really stands out is the one from Edward Waters College in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida signed by past Edward Waters College president Robert L. Mitchell.

There are many visual monitors in the museum documenting through verbal/visual documentation the importance of this great era. It is still raining and I am grateful for carrying my umbrella. It is also indicated that Bishop Desmond Tutu family house in just a few doors away. Something about the rain dropping on the house make it look very majestic.
