Seeking a seasonal intern to assist with invasive species prevention activities during the summer of 2024. This is a great opportunity to learn how to coordinate and engage volunteers around solving environmental challenges in Rhode Island.
What You’ll Do As an intern for NEIWPCC, you’ll work alongside full-time staff to assist with the implementation of a community-based habitat restoration project focused on the removal of water chestnut in the Blackstone and Ten Mile Watersheds. You will:
Coordinate water chestnut pulling events by recruiting and training volunteers, tracking volunteer data, and maintaining materials and supplies.
Produce informational materials and develop social media posts for the project, and act as a liaison between state and municipal partners.
Assist with permitting requirements.
What You Bring The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally the candidate will be a high school graduate with 1-2 years of college education in biology, environmental science, chemistry, or related natural science field. Experience coordinating volunteers and working with diverse communities, as well as excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills are needed. Experience with canoeing, kayaking, or light watercraft is desirable. Some understanding of Spanish preferable. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors, able to swim, and physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. Applicants with alternative qualifications or who have taken a less traditional career path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent.
Logistics The anticipated hourly payrate for this position starts at $18.25. This is a seasonal NEIWPCC internship based out of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management office located in Providence, RI. Duties will be performed in office and outdoor field settings, with need for local and regional travel to participate in related meetings and events in a variety of outdoor conditions. This intern will be expected to work 35 hours per week, with some flexibility. This internship is anticipated to begin late May or early June and will extend into August. Occasional weekend and evening work is anticipated to oversee events in June and July. This position is not eligible for telework. TYPICAL TASKS This position has shared responsibility with the department Operations Manager as outlined below. This position will have an emphasis on duties that are technical and accreditation related. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Manages, evaluates and oversees the Communication Center's overall operations, including call taking, emergency dispatch, training, and/or technical and maintenance services; develops, recommends and implements new and revised policies, procedures and work methods based on user needs and service provider requirements; oversees the implementation of operational directives to ensure the efficient operations; provides technical project oversight and management; troubleshoots technical problems. Hires and manages supervisory, technical and training staff to provide quality service to citizens, public safety, user and partner agencies and County staff; prepares performance evaluations; recommends and administers progressive discipline; conducts or facilitates staff training and development programs; promotes cooperative team efforts among staff and with other departments. Manages and oversees the center's training programs for new and current employees; ensures training activities are provided, documented and in coordination with the center's operational policies and procedures; implements and monitors employee work plans to achieve department goals and objectives; plans, evaluates, coordinates and maintains training records; develops and recommends short and long term training goals for training new dispatch staff; tracks trends of progression or decline in trainee performance. Directs and coordinates the operation, maintenance and repair of radio communications systems, including site maintenance, repair and upgrades, radio programming and template design, and radio and supply inventory management; provides problem solving and design assistance to staff; coordinates required technical training and/or equipment or technology related training; coordinates with other County departments. Directs and coordinates the operation, preventative maintenance, and service and repair of building systems; schedules with vendors and equipment representatives; reviews contractor performance and recommends changes to meet Center needs; serves as point of contact for contractors; coordinates with the Facilities Management Division for the operation, preventative maintenance, and repair of building systems such as heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical, and security. Oversees the safety and security of the center, its employees and equipment; responds to changes in County, State, or Federal threat levels and adjusts security accordingly. Researches and recommends changes to operational plans and communications programs due to changes in communications technology; performs or coordinates special projects related to the enhancement of dispatch operations; presents recommendations to User Board for consideration and funding approval. Receives, investigates and resolves complaints and inquiries from citizens and other agencies regarding services provided; serves as the center's liaison with user agencies to resolve operational problems and concerns. Represents the County on User Board, task forces and technical groups; participates in regional and state organizations to promote and coordinate emergency services. Prepares annual and supplemental budgets for center's operations; monitors revenues and expenditures; develops and administers grants, requests for proposals, and professional service contracts on behalf of the County; recommends changes in staffing levels, and equipment purchases and upgrades. Acts in the capacity of the Communications Director in his/her absence. WORK SCHEDULE This position is included in the County's alternate workweek program, working 40 hours during a standard workweek of Monday through Thursday (Fridays off).
